How do you think Eileen Gray would feel if she could see her self-designed villa E1027 in the south of France become the vibrant backdrop for a Louis Vuitton campaign? "How absurd, in my day, hardly anyone cared." At least, that's how the Irish designer's reaction is passed down following an auction in the early 1970s in which one of her works, a lacquered screen, was sold for the then-record sum of 18,000 pounds.
Today, however, the house designed by the self-taught architect in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin - also known as "Maison En Bord De Mer" - is considered an icon of modern architecture. Not only the building, but all the furniture was designed by the Irish artist. Many of her current design classics date from this period, including the famous Adjustable Table E1027, the artful Blue Marine and Centimètre rugs, or the popular Tube Light floor lamp. E1027 is not only the first work of a self-taught designer, but equally the total work of art of a versatile design par excellence.
It is in this spectacular setting that creative duo Mert Atlas and Marcus Piggott most recently staged the new Louis Vuitton Capucines campaign, for which Golden Globe-winning actress and singer Zendaya was named testimonial: "The Capucines is an icon of femininity and symbolizes the essence of Louis Vuitton. It was crafted with a unique harmony of elegance, versatility and savoir-faire. Expressing the bold spirit of Louis Vuitton, the house's new ambassador, Zendaya, presents the iconic Capucines collection."
Icons among themselves.
