Sebastian Herkner

1981

Sebastian Herkner was born in Bad Mergentheim. He studied product design at HfG Offenbach am Main where he founded his own studio for objects, interior design and exhibition design in 2006. During his studies, he already focused on designing objects and furniture merging various cultural contexts. He gets his inspiration from original materials and techniques. Through the use of contemporary technologies and refinement methods, he reinterprets simple mechanical principles and processing technologies.

With his Bell Table design from 2012, which is part of the ClassiCon collection, he succeeded in taking his first big step towards international recognition. Today, Herkner is one of the most important designers of his generation. He works for international companies, designs furniture and lamps, porcelain and glass, and also curates and stages exhibitions dealing with design.

Sebastian Herkner’s success is reflected in numerous awards and prizes, including the 2011 German Design Award in the ‘Newcomer’ category and the 2015 EDIDA Award for ‘Best International Newcomer’. Sebastian Herkner was named guest of honour at imm cologne 2016 and invited to present his concept for ‘Das Haus – Interiors on Stage’. At Maison&Objet Paris, Herkner received the Designer of the Year Award 2019, followed by the EDIDA Award as 'Best International Designer' in 2021. Herkner has also been included several times in Architectural Digest magazine's prestigious list of the ‘AD 100 Best Designers of the Year’, most recently in 2022.

In a world where things increasingly disintegrate, craftsmanship takes on an entirely new meaning and special significance.
